Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery on your own. Find a clean area to work on. Place all the tools you will need. Find the battery's hatch, and open it using a flathead, coin, or a similar tool. Next, carefully pry the battery from its socket by lifting it up on the side that is closest to the key-ring loop. Make sure you wear rubber gloves to avoid damaging the clips or electronic contact surfaces.

After the battery is removed, place the new battery into its socket. Make sure that the positive side is facing upwards and that it is placed in all the clips. Slide the cover downwards towards the key-ring until it is loose and falls off. Then, you can remove the cover to reveal the mechanical key blade that is hidden within. You can use this to unlock your vehicle from the driver's side in the event that you've lost or damaged your key fob.

How to Start Your Vehicle

Modern vehicles are equipped with key fobs that do more than simply unlock and lock the doors. They also have other useful functions such as summoning or auto parking the vehicle. In fact, the brand new Volvo XC60 can even remotely start your engine using its key fob buttons. How exactly does it work?

Find a clean, flat surface on which you can place the necessary items for this project. Then, lay the fob down on the surface with its Volvo logo facing upward. Next you will need a flathead screwdriver, coin or similar tool to turn the battery hatch back to the open position. Avoid touching the electronic contact surfaces using your tools. This can cause the fob to stop working properly.

When the hatch is opened and the battery is in its socket and make sure it is properly seated with the positive (+) side facing up. Once the clips are locked into place, replace the battery cover, and then reassemble the fob.

By pressing the unlock button only once the alarm will be disengaged and the driver's door will be unlocked. If you press it again it will unlock all doors and the tailgate. The unlock button can also be useful for rolling down the windows to let in fresh, cool air on a hot summer's day. If you'd like more, the keyfob can be used to activate the ERS that will begin the climate control system of the vehicle and allow it to warm or cool the vehicle to the desired temperature levels when the vehicle is parked.

How to replace the battery

If your key fob isn't locking or unlocking your vehicle as it used to, it may be time to replace the battery. The battery can be replaced with a flathead screwdriver, plastic pry bar or other small tools. First, locate the small slot that the backup / emergency key for ignition made of metal used to reside. Use the blade of your screwdriver or pry bar tool into this slot and gently open the back of the fob that holds the key. After the fob is open, locate the CR2032 3V battery and remove it. Note: Some older Volvos have a different battery which is the CR2025. CR2025 batteries are 7 tenths of a millimeter less than a CR2032 battery, so you will need to be careful with the placement of the replacement.
