China's celebrities warned they must 'oppose decadent money worship'

Beijing has exercised a more assertive paternal hand this year, from tacking the addiction of youngsters to online games, deemed a form of "spiritual opium", to clamping down on "blind" worship of internet celebrities.

Wendy Morton has also been installed as the Tories' first female chief whip, in charge of parliamentary party discipline.

Ben Wallace remains Defence Secretary after backing her campaign and Brandon Lewis is made Justice Secretary, while Boris Johnson loyalist Jacob Rees Mogg is business secretary. Kemi Badenoch's loyalty was also rewarded as she is named International Trade Secretary, while Kit Malthouse becomes Education Secretary.

SHANGHAI, Oct 23 (Reuters) - China has passed an education law that seeks to cut the "twin pressures" of homework and off-site tutoring in core subjects, the official Xinhua news agency said on Saturday.

The new law, which has not been published in full, makes local governments responsible for ensuring that the twin pressures are reduced and asks parents to arrange their children's' time to account for reasonable rest and exercise, thereby reducing pressure, said the agency, and avoiding overuse of the internet.

'As a Chinese in the new era, a Chinese actor, and a Chinese literary and art worker, it is very necessary to understand one's own direction, determine the meaning of one's responsibilities, manage well one's words and deeds, and improve one's personal morality,' she said.

Her regular spot was dropped by the BBC in a programme shake-up in 1997 but the following year she made a comeback for a sketch alongside presenter Bradley Walsh. In the sketch, Walsh's brother Del, who runs a market stall, tries to convince Meg of his own fortune-telling method - frying sausages.

Actress Zhao Wei, who is the face of Fendi in China, was wiped from the internet last month, with films and TV shows she starred in being removed from streaming services, without the government providing any reason.

'She even became part of the English language - if a politician, somebody from showbiz or ordinary people in the street are asked a tricky question they will say ''Who do you think I am, Mystic Meg?''... It shows what an impact she made.'

She said: 'I read Mystic Meg in The Sun and it said don't forget to check your lottery ticket. After mother-of-four Mary Jones from Gwynedd, north Wales, won £9.3million in 2004. I couldn't believe it when I realised it had come true.'

Our brilliant and incomparable Meg was synonymous with The Sun - she was a total legend. We loved her and so did our readers. The Sun's editor, Victoria Newton, said: 'This is devastating news.20061018-3_p101806pm-078-515h.jpg
