This was up from 44.9% the prior year. HSBC - already one of the most unequal banks in Britain in terms of gender pay - reported a wider mean average gap for the year, disclosing women were paid 45.2% less than men.

From labor alone, they figured, the gains would add up to $22.9 trillion over the thirty years from 1990 to 2019, with bigger gains in more recent years as the share of non-white populations has increased while the gaps have remained fairly steady.

"We surveyed 11,000 high school students during the pandemic and at least 30% of them said that mental health was one of their very top concerns," said Pope. "Typically, we see homework as a top concern, or grades." 

There are proposals to train a lot more tutors since many will be needed to help the kids who have fallen behind when they go back to the classroom this fall. Those efforts will include summer programs and tutoring.

Where pay gaps were further broken down by ethnicity, they showed the largest pay disparities were between Black and white employees.

The widest gap was Deutsche Bank's at 38.4%, though this narrowed slightly on the prior year.

The New York Times has reported on the teen mental health crisis as well.  The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention have reported a 30% jump in the number of adolescents' visits to emergency rooms in 2020 to treat mental health-related symptoms. And the American Journal of Pediatrics published a study in December, showing a 25% jump in ER visits for young adults to treat suicidal behavior.

The paper was written with Shelby Buckman, a graduate student at Stanford University, Boston University post-grad Lily Seitelman, and San Francisco Fed vice president of community development Laura Choi.

Pope said, "We now have teachers, who instead of grading papers and writing feedback and handing the paper back to a kid, they're making a little video about it, which is really personal and can say a lot more. And honestly, it's a little more efficient [for the teacher]." 

Teachers have also accelerated their use of other technologies like Zoom for video conferencing, Google Docs for collaborative learning and Kahoot for turning online quizzes into games. That's an example of something that could continue after the pandemic.

LONDON, April 5 (Reuters) - HSBC, Goldman Sachs , Morgan Stanley and Standard Chartered reported a widening in the gap between what they paid women and men in 2022, according to data reviewed by Reuters.

Large and persistent gaps in rates of employment, education, and earnings across races "add up to a smaller economic pie for the nation as a whole," Daly said in a briefing ahead of the paper's release Thursday.

Experts say that while the gender pay gap data is a blunt tool for measuring disparities - as it does not reflect gaps at the same level of seniority, for example - it can capture broad inequities and affect change.

Some kids simply like learning from home better because they can concentrate easier, use their time more efficiently or don't have to worry about bullying and mission park elementary school social pressures as much. Kids with attention deficit disorder have the advantage of fewer distractions when schooling from home. Older kids can fit schooling around their work schedules much easier. While Pope stresses that "there are far more negatives" overall for students from the past year, she also highlighted that there have been positives for kids.
